Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to the numbers of flaws or imperfections within the stone. It is extremely rare for a diamond to be entirely flawless, often having trace minerals or other tiny characteristics within the diamond. In the diamond jewellery industry, these imperfections are referred to as 'inclusions'.

During diamond classification, a gemmologist will inspect the stone using a magnification level of 10 times the naked eye. The diamond will be awarded a diamond clarity rating based on the type, position, size and number of inclusions in the diamond. The rarest and therefore most expensive diamond has a clarity rating of FL or IF. Such a diamond is Flawless and Internally Flawless.

Clarity Rating

A diamond with a diamond clarity rating of VVS1 or VVS2 is still an excellent quality diamond with regards to its clarity and is virtually flawless, with only minute inclusions within the stone. It would be extremely difficult to view the inclusions in these qualities of diamonds with 10 times magnification, and impossible to view with the naked eye.

Clarity Grade

A diamond with the clarity grade of either VS1 or VS2 is also still an exceptional clarity for a diamond. In brilliant cut diamonds such as round, princess, marquise and pear it would be extremely unlikely that the inclusions would be seen with the naked eye. But for step cut diamonds such as the emerald or asscher cut we would recommend not to go below the VS1 clarity grade, as an added precaution because inclusions are easier to view in step cut diamonds.

Choosing a Diamond

It is always advisable that when choosing a diamond, you select one without inclusions visible to the naked eye. The beauty of the diamond is therefore uncompromised. Due to the compromise on quality and appearance of diamonds graded in the Included range of SI2 to I3, diamonds with a clarity rating of below SI1 (Slightly Included) are not offered on this site.
